The number one rule of scuba diving is never ever hold your breathe. This article will let you know regarding underwater breathing before you descend into the water.
Which type of gas do you breathe while scuba diving?
Type of gas that divers actually use is not 100% oxygen as it would be toxic for your body. Scuba divers tanks contain air that is exactly the same as you are breathing right now. The air contains 21% oxygen and 79% nitrogen. The deeper you dive, the higher the pressure, the pressure needs you to breathe using a proper mixture of gases to make your lungs comfortable while breathing.
How do scuba divers breathe underwater?
It is impossible for divers to breathe underwater through their nose as the mask covers their eyes and nose. Breathing underwater is something that is uncommon as your oxygen is inside a tank. To inhale and exhale underwater in an appropriate way is via your mouth.
How to improve your breathing thecniques while scuba diving?
The average human breath is about 20x per minute while on land. By having proper breathing techniques you are able to reduce your breathing cycles while diving.
Knowing your breathing rhythm
You need to know your breathing rhythm. Inhaling deeply and slowly, even longer exhalation, also never holding your breath and keeping your body relaxed is the key to having perfect breathing techniques while scuba diving. When you start to practise more by having more diving experiences you will develop your breathing techniques.
Practising diaphragm breathing
Scuba diving breathing techniques also known as abdominal breathing. This technique is also practised in Yoga. By doing this you will learn to use diaphragm to breathe and make your lungs breathe efficiently.
What are the diving advantages of a proper breathing pattern?
Buoyancy
When you inhale your body slowly will rise up, when you exhale your body will start to sink into the water. So you have to keep your breathing rhythm to achieve neutral buoyancy. If you are neutral you will move easily and relax in the water.
Lower air consumption
The key to staying long underwater is to lower your air consumption by keeping your breath deep and slow. Keeping your breath deep and slow will help you to get the neutral buoyancy to keep you relaxed and stay calm which means you will consume less air. On the other hand if you have poor buoyancy you will push yourself more to kick in the water. It seems like working out at the gym - which you will consume more air.
