Did you ever simply sail around there and feel perfectly light in the air and a thousand electric-blue fish gave you a performance right before your eyes? I am referring to the times when a huge winged shadow passes by, flying very fast. It is something beautiful, and no one says anything; it makes your heart leap. It is very much like a dream. But it's not. This is what a normal morning feels like when you're exploring the waters of Bali.

Everyone talks about the island's beauty on land. But hark me out, the magic there begins to be the real one. Down there, it is a different universe, alive and colored. It only awaits you to leap in and have a glimpse of it.

So, who are the neighbors? Let's get introduced.

The Majestic Manta Ray of Bali

You never, ever forget your first manta ray. It's like watching a bird fly underwater. So graceful. They're these huge, gentle creatures, their wings can stretch wider than a car! But they move so softly, like they're not even trying.

Here in Bali, you'll mainly run into two kinds.

First, the Oceanic Manta Ray. This one is the big, rare superstar. It's absolutely massive. You can tell it by the dark back and those smart-looking white patches on its belly. They tend to be the loners, so spotting one feels extra special.

Then you have the Reef Manta Ray. You're more likely to see these guys, often in little groups. They have a lighter, triangular pattern on their back. My favorite thing is watching them at "cleaning stations." They hover over the reef like a spaceship at a pit stop, letting tiny fish tidy them up. It's the best show in town.

Where to find them: If you're looking for a manta ray Bali experience, head to Nusa Penida. Places like Manta Bay and Manta Point are famous for good reason. Your best shot is between April and October, though I've seen happy divers find them in other months, too.

The Ancient Sea Turtle

If mantas are the ballerinas, turtles are the wise old professors. They have this calm, slow energy that just makes you relax. You never get tired of seeing one. Around here, you'll mostly chat about the Hawksbill and the Green Turtle.

You are able to see them sailing over the coral reefs, and stopping here and there to have a snack of sponge or sea-grass. A little advice? Always let them have their space. Don't chase them. The magic happens when a turtle gets curious and decides to check you out.

Where to find them: Honestly, turtles are all over the place! The USAT Liberty wreck in Tulamben is basically a turtle playground. They are also crowded in the reefs of Nusa Penida and Nusa Lembongan.

Bali's Hidden Cast of Underwater Characters

Believe me, the marine life in Bali doesn't end there. There's a whole cast of characters.

  • The Mola Mola (Ocean Sunfish): Now, this one is a weird and wonderful prize. It's the heaviest bony fish on the planet and looks like a giant pancake that forgot how to swim properly. They're shy, seasonal, and a real treat if you spot one around Nusa Penida from July on.

  • Colorful Reef Fish: Get ready for your eyes to pop. We are talking about clownfish wiggling in their anemone homes, about angel fish with patterns you must see to believe in, and about giant and glittering schools of jacks which move as one living thing.

  • The Small & Strange: This is my favorite part. You have to look closely. Diving into the sea in such a location as Seraya, the so-called muck shows the secrets of the ocean. I mean frogfish with their psychedelic dresses, octopuses with their power to change skins in a second, and sensitive ghost pipefish. It's a secret world for the curious.

Your Bali Dive Adventure Awaits

The marine life in Bali is just spectacular. It really is. It is the manta ray that stops your heart, or it is the turtle that has decided to make you his new friend in a minute; every time you dive, it has a story.

Feeling inspired to see it for yourself? What creature are you most excited to cross off your list?

We're the team at Bali Fun Diving, and we live for this. We are familiar with these spots as the back of our hands, and we will ensure that we demonstrate them to you in safe ways. We maintain our parties small due to the fact that that is when you receive the good, quiet moments. Well, why not? We will have a peep.
