Nitrogen narcosis is a phenomenon that affects scuba divers. Scuba divers must be aware of diving in the deep water. Nitrogen narcosis can be a serious problem as a fatal health condition. In this article we would like to share about nitrogen narcosis.

What is Nitrogen Narcosis?

Nitrogen narcosis, also known as depth intoxication or ecstasy of the deep, is a shift in consciousness and neuromuscular function caused by breathing compressed inert gas. This condition is most commonly seen in scuba divers who breathe compressed nitrogen; however, it can also occur when other inert gases, such as oxygen, nitrogen, and other gases are inhaled. Nitrogen narcosis is a temporary condition, it can have major health implications.

What are the symptoms of nitrogen narcosis?

Divers should know the symptoms of nitrogen narcosis in themselves or their buddy as the first to treat these issues. Here are the symptoms of nitrogen narcosis:

  • Impaired judgement

  • Difficulty concentrating

  • Drowsiness

  • Overconfidence and euphoria

  • Anxious and afraid

Here are some tips to against nitrogen narcosis:

To avoid nitrogen narcosis is by restricting your dive limitation to 30m or even shallower.

- Dive with buddy

Never dive alone! Dive with a buddy that you can trust, - ideally someone that knows your dive skills & behaviour well - they could be on the same level or even greater.

Knowing how to recognize and avoid depth intoxication is an important safety skill. Needless to say, in case of an emergency underwater, a diver needs to be able to think quickly and react quickly.
